Audiobook Creating Software Apps

ACX.com and Audible.com are both owned by Amazon and focus on audiobooks, but have some key differences:

  • ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange) is a marketplace that connects rights holders with audiobook narrators/producers. Rights holders can post their book projects on ACX for narrators to audition for and produce the audiobook.
  • Audible is the leading retailer and producer of downloadable audiobooks and other spoken word content. Audible allows customers to buy and listen to audiobooks on various devices.
  • ACX is more focused on the production side - getting audiobooks created by connecting rights holders and producers. Audible is more focused on the retail/distribution side - selling completed audiobooks to listeners.
  • Many audiobooks on Audible are produced through ACX. Rights holders use ACX to find narrators and produce the audiobook, then distribute it through Audible's retail platform. But Audible also produces some exclusive audiobooks internally.
  • In summary, ACX facilitates audiobook creation and Audible sells and distributes the finished audiobooks to customers. They work together to turn print books into audiobooks available for sale on Audible and elsewhere.
